PH gets clobbered by China in Fiba Women’s Asia Cup q’finals

The Philippines got clobbered as China flexed its might in a massive 117-43 beating in the quarterfinals of the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup Thursday at Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in India.

It was never a fight as the Chinese immediately went into the offensive from the opening period with a 33-13 lead to close the first quarter.

Things became even uglier for the Philippines when it managed to score just a couple of points in the second quarter while China poured in 28 to go into the halftime break with a 61-15 lead.

China is set to face the winner between Japan and Chinese-Taipei in the semifinals.

Duterte challenges Joma to ‘return home and fight here’

 

 

 

 

In the latest installment of their word war, President Rodrigo Duterte called on self-exiled Communist Part of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison to go home and bring the fight in the Philippines.

 

In his visit to the wake of six police officers killed by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Guihulngan City, Negros Orientalon Thursdaynight, Duterte dared Sison to leave the “comfort” of his life in Utrecht, Netherlands.

 

“If you are truly a revolutionary leader, my god, come home and fight here,” Duterte said, adding that Sison has been “spending another government’s money” while his “people here, the NPA, die.”

Councilor of ‘drug-infested’ town shot dead in Maguindanao

COTABATO CITY — Unidentified motorcycle-riding men have shot dead a municipal councilor along the national highway in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, police saidon Thursday.

Senior Supt. Agustin Tello, Maguindanao police provincial director, said Guialulson Guimel Angan, 54, councilor of Talitay town, was driving his motorbike when two men on separate motorbikes opened fire on himon Wednesdayafternoon (July 26).

He died of multiple gunshot injuries after the4 p.m.attack.

Tello said the gunmen quickly fled heading toward Talitay.

Money changer shot dead in Bataan city robbery

 

 

BALANGA CITY, Philippines—The owner of a money changing shop in this city was shot dead when he refused to hand over money to a gunman on Wednesday.

 

Eric Nuestro, 51, was about to leave his shop with his wife at the Naval Commercial Building when he was accosted by the robber at 6:35 p.m. The suspect, who was wearing a helmet, fled on a motorcycle after shooting Nuestro.

Aguirre takes over BuCor amid drug return to Bilibid

Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II has taken over the Bureau of Corrections’ (BuCor) after Director General Benjamin delos Santos resigned amid the reported return of the drug trade at the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

 

“In the interest of the service, and in view of the indefinite leave of absence of BuCor Director General Benjamin De Los Santos, the undersigned … shall directly supervise the management and operations of the BuCor,” read a department order signed by Aguirre.

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia — Thanks to “bullet-proof” display counters, a group of hammer-wielding robbers failed to remove jewellery from an outlet in a Shah Alam mall last Monday.

Despite continuously swinging their hammers against the showcase counters with great effort, the robbers were unable to break through the durable material and were forced to flee empty-handed.

A senator allied with President Duterte said Thursday that he could not, in conscience, support the administration’s tax reform package, which he described as “pro-government but anti-consumer.”

 

“While I support President Rodrigo Duterte’s various programs such as infrastructure development, I cannot in my conscience support the comprehensive tax reform program being pushed by the Department of Finance (DOF) as I see its current form as pro-government, but anti-consumer,” Sen. JV Ejercito said in a statement.

 

The President, in his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, pressed the Senate to pass the proposed tax reform bill in full and with haste.
