Soldier shot dead by suspected NPA in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY — An Army soldier was gunned down on Saturday morning by suspected communist rebels at a marketplace in Daraga town in Albay province, police said.

Chief Inspector Arthur Gomez, Bicol police spokesperson, said Private First Class George Rey Murillo, 27, a resident of Castilla town in Sorsogon province, was attacked by three unidentified armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) Special Partisan Unit (SPARU) in Barangay (village) Anislag at around 6 a.m.

Tropical depression ‘Tino’ continues to move away from PH

Tropical Depression “Tino” was last tracked at 305 km West Northwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan on Saturday morning as it continued to move away from the country, the weather bureau said.

“Tino” was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 55 km/h and gusts of up to 80 km/h, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 3:00 a.m. forecast.

Pagasa said “Tino” will maintain its West Northwest movement at 28 km/h, and is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility later this morning.

Pentagon releases sexual assault data

WASHINGTON — US troops have reported more than 20,000 allegations of sexual assault at military installations over the past four years, the Pentagon said in a report Friday.

The report, by the Defense Department’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, details allegations by service branch for the fiscal years 2013-2016, with the Army — the largest branch of the military — reporting 8,294 cases in all.

The Navy meanwhile reported 4,788 cases, the Marine Corps 3,400 and the Air Force 8,876.

The military has about 1.3 million active-duty troops.

NU gets golden double in UAAP taekwondo

National University secured a double championship in the UAAP Season 80 taekwondo, dominating the three-day competition.

The Bulldogs bagged their first men’s title after going undefeated in all their six outings including an identical 6-1 wins over University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern U Friday at Blue Eagle Gym.

University of the Philippines took the second spot after finishing the tournament with a 4-2 win-loss slate while UST salvaged the bronze medal.

NU also clinched back-to-back in the the women’s division with a 6-0 sweep.

NU’s Arven Alcantara and Rheza Aragon were named the men’s and women’s MVP, respectively.

Blatche arriving soon, will play for Gilas vs Japanese

Andray Blatche, barring any injuries, will finally join Gilas Pilipinas in the next couple of days and will reinforce the Filipinos in their first two Fiba Asia Qualifying games against Japan and Chinese Taipei.

The 6-foot-11 Blatche, Team PH’s naturalized player, will play Xinjiang’s final game for the year in the China Basketball Association slated Friday night.

Blatche was set to arrive Nov. 12 but apparently, failed to get a leave from the Flying Tigers.

Xinjiang’s next game will be in January, and that poses another problem for the Gilas coaching staff as the Filipinos will play the Taiwanese and Australia in February.

The United States updated on Thursday its advice to travelers heading for Europe, warning of an increased terrorist threat over the Christmas and New Year holiday season.

US nets 214 in nationwide MS-13 gang sweep

 

United States authorities announced on Thursday that 214 members of the notorious MS-13 gang had been arrested in a one-month sweep around the country.

 

More than half of those picked up in the operations, which was led by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, were arrested on immigration violations. But 93 were dealt federal criminal charges including murder, robbery, drugs, and racketeering.
