PH’s 6.9% economic growth in Q3 elates Palace

Malacaangon Thursdaywelcomed the 6.9 percent growth of the Philippine economy in the third quarter of 2017.

“That’s good news,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a Palace briefing.

The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 6.9% in the third quarter, exceeding the 6.7-percent growth in the second quarter and the 6.4 percent posted in the first quarter.

The growth, however, was slower than the7 percent growth in the third quarter of 2016 but still made the Philippines the second fastest-growing economy in Asia next to Vietnam.

Senator Gringo Honasan welcomed on Thursday the start of the negotiations on the Code of Conduct on the South China Sea, calling it a “marked improvement” in the Philippine-China diplomatic relations.

“Eh di malaking bagay na yun (It’s huge development), a marked improvement of what it was half a decade ago. Any incremental improvement in the situation should be welcomed,” Honasan said in a chance interview.

‘Cutting emissions will not stifle growth’ — UN secretary general

BONN, Germany — United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said reducing carbon emissions would not be detrimental to economic growth.

Speaking at the plenary of high-level climate talks here, Guterres cited the examples of China and India, which have posted economic growth while leading the transition to renewable energy.

He then called on world leaders to take on the ‘mantle of climate leadership’ by considering the adverse effects of climate change when deciding on infrastructure projects that might be highly polluting.

“If big infrastructure projects are not ‘green,’ they should not be given the green light,” he said.

Australian diplomat dies in fall off NYC terrace — police

NEW YORK, United States — Police say an Australian diplomat fell to his death from a seventh-floor terrace in Manhattan.

The New York Police Department says 30-year-old Julian Simpson and others went on an apartment building roof to look at the Empire State Building lights early Wednesday.

The building was lit in rainbow colors in recognition of a survey that found most Australians support marriage equality and ensured that lawmakers will vote on a same-sex marriage bill this year.

Police say Simpson swung a woman around and her husband got angry. The men then went on a seventh-floor apartment terrace, and Simpson offered to prove he was trustworthy by playing a …

Why Gloria and not Leni? Nothing political, says Palace

Apparently, former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was given a major role in the just concluded 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit by the Duterte administration, a role that should have been given to Vice President Leni Robredo, according to opposition Sen. Leila de Lima.

In a statement, De Lima said Arroyo’s “curious” role was an “oddity” at the Asean summit.

“It appears that in lieu of the duly elected (Robredo), who was sidelined by the administration from the Asean events, the government chose in her stead former President Arroyo, for reasons only (Foreign) Secretary (Alan Peter) Cayetano and the prot…

Children’s book on Fil-Am labor hero Larry Itliong is in the works

SAN FRANCISCO — In September 1965, Filipino farm workers went on strike and walked off from table-grape farms that they labored on for less than minimum wages in Delano, California.

What eventually became known as the Delano Grape Strike lasted more than five years. It was organized and led by Larry Itliong along with fellow Filipino American farm workers and labor organizers, Philip Vera Cruz, Benjamin Gines and Pete Velasco, protesting working conditions as well as demanding compensation equal to the federal minimum wage.

The National Farm Workers Association led by Cesar Chavez with Dolores Huerta joined the Filipinos on strike, eventually merging with the Agricul…

Fil-Am’s new musical, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle,’ to open in Seattle

SEATTLE — Justin Huertas has composed music and written songs for the musical “Howl’s Moving Castle” for Book-it Repertory Theatre to be shown starting November 29.

Huertas first worked with Book-it, whose ethos is adapting books for the stage, as an actor in its production “Welcome to Braggsville” earlier this year, for which he received a nomination at this year’s Gregory Awards for Best Actor in a Play.

It was during that show when founding co-artistic director Myra Platt assigned him to write songs for “Howl’s.”

Huertas recalls, “When she told me they had secured the rights to adapt the book, I literally fell on the floor with a …

Valley Fever getting worse this year in California’s farm areas

Valley Fever is shaping up to be worse this year than in 2016, when the number of cases in California hit a record high.

Valley Fever is most common in the southern San Joaquin Valley and along the Central Coast, according to state public health officials.

Suspected cases of the fungal disease in the first 10 months of 2017 surged by more than one-third from the same period last year to 5,121, officials at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said Monday.

That puts this year on track to surpass the number of cases recorded in 2016.

“It is important that people living, working and traveling in California are aware of its symptoms, especially in the souther…

Financial discussions for climate ‘loss and damage’ stalls at COP23

Despite push of developing nations to include financial mechanisms to address “loss and damage” caused by climate change, a draft decision released by working groups of the 23rd Conference of Parties (COP) on Tuesday night (German time) effectively stalled financial discussions for compensation during high-clevel UN climate talks in Bonn, Germany.

World leaders are currently in talks to craft a road map for the implementation of the Paris Agreement, a global climate accord that seeks to limit the rise of global temperatures well below 2C and curb the effects of climate change.
‘Weak language’
Harjeet Singh, global climate lead of Action Aid, said that the language used in the de…

PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE
—————————————————
Duterte wants to overhaul the unitary-presidential system and shift to a federal-parliamentary system through a Constitutional Convention. He desires the holding of a plebiscite and preparing the future federal states to effect power-sharing, resources-sharing, respect-for-all and development-for-all as key to reforming the whole bureaucracy to effect good governance. Reforms under the new system are said to include: increasing the salaries of government workers; fighting graft and corruption; and unleashing the full potentials of all regions and ethnic groups for social, economic and cultural growth. Furthermore, constitutional amendment shall lift restrictive economic provisions in the Constitution, grant more foreign ownership of property and certain industries.

The centerpiece of Duterte’s campaign platform was suppressing the three so-called evils: crime, illegal drugs and corruption, which he believes are undermining security across all sectors and hampering the growth of the domestic economy. He pledged to instill discipline with an iron fist for everyone to adhere to the rule of law and strengthen the country’s justice system. To reestablish law and order, he plans to launch a focused, time-bound campaign against criminals, drug lords and corrupt government officials through the joint efforts of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

He also plans to carry out: improvement of government provision of social services which include education, health, housing, mass transportation with special attention to the elderly, women, children, youth, indigenous peoples and other marginalized sectors; provision of assistance to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families; and adaptation to climate change through reducing risk, preparing for natural disasters and adopting 911 nationwide.
